What to Expect

Your first consultation with Prof Jeffery is thorough, unhurried, and centred entirely around you. Here's what happens and how to prepare.

First consultation

Your first appointment

Allow 45–60 minutes for your first visit

Prof Jeffery takes a thorough, systematic approach to your first consultation — reviewing your history, discussing your symptoms, and establishing an accurate working diagnosis. No treatment decisions are rushed.

Detailed history
Prof Jeffery will take a comprehensive history of your symptoms, their onset, severity, and impact on your daily life.

Clinical examination
A pelvic examination may be required. You will always be informed beforehand and a nurse will be present. You may decline at any time.

Investigations
Bladder scan, urodynamic studies, pelvic ultrasound, or blood tests may be arranged — depending on your symptoms.

Treatment discussion
Prof Jeffery will explain your diagnosis, the available treatment options (surgical and non-surgical), and his recommendation.

Written summary
A letter summarising the consultation findings and agreed plan will be sent to your referring doctor.

What to bring

South African ID or passport
Medical aid card and membership details
Previous scan reports or blood results
Letters from referring specialist or GP
List of current medications (or boxes)
Completed new patient questionnaire (if sent)
Comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing
A support person if you wish

If you have had previous pelvic or gynaecological surgery, please bring any available operation notes or discharge summaries. This is particularly important for mesh-related concerns.

Follow-up and results

Investigation results

Reviewed personally by Prof Jeffery — routine results at follow-up, urgent results by phone.

Referral letter

Consultation letter sent to your referring doctor within 5–7 working days.

Contacting the practice

Phone, email, or WhatsApp during consulting hours. After-hours: CBH emergency line.

Chaperone policy

A practice nurse or chaperone is present for every examination by default. You may bring a support person, and you always have the right to decline or postpone at any point.
