A career built on evidence, ethics, and expertise

Prof Stephen Jeffery belongs to the founding generation of clinicians who established urogynaecology as a recognised subspecialty in South Africa — among those who built its clinical foundations, shaped its standards, and defined how the field developed locally. He holds RCOG subspecialty accreditation, the international benchmark for urogynaecological training, achieved through formal fellowship in the United Kingdom. With more than two decades of specialist practice, he continues to see the full spectrum of pelvic floor disorders from three Cape Town consulting rooms.

As a Professor at the University of Cape Town and founder of SLATE Surgical Training Centre, his influence has extended well beyond the consulting room for decades. Many of the urogynaecologists and pelvic floor surgeons now practising across Southern Africa trained under or alongside him — a lineage of clinical formation that reflects his long-term investment in the specialty.

Gynaecologist vs Urogynaecologist

The distinction matters — especially when the problem is pelvic floor specific.

General

Gynaecologist

  • Broad training in women's reproductive health
  • Manages contraception, menstrual disorders, fertility
  • Performs standard gynaecological surgery
  • Trained to manage pelvic floor conditions — but not exclusively
Subspecialist

Urogynaecologist

  • A gynaecologist who completed an additional formal subspecialty fellowship
  • Trained exclusively in pelvic floor disorders — prolapse, incontinence, OAB, mesh revision
  • RCOG accreditation is the international benchmark — awarded after structured UK fellowship training
  • Fewer than 10 RCOG-accredited urogynaecologists practise in South Africa

Prof Jeffery sees only pelvic floor conditions — every consultation, every day. He is also part of the original generation who helped establish this subspecialty in South Africa, and has trained many of the clinicians now practising in the field.

Thorough, unhurried,
and entirely on your terms.

Pelvic floor conditions are amongst the most personal in medicine. Prof Jeffery's approach to every consultation reflects that depth of understanding.

Your history is taken fully before any examination is discussed.

No investigation or procedure proceeds without your informed consent and full understanding.

You set the pace — there is no pressure, no rush, and no assumption.
